Leading the Way from Strangers to Neighbors


On Thursday November 9th from 4-5pm, Author Kao Kalia Yang will be giving an author talk entitled "Leading the Way from Strangers to Friends."  The talk will be given in Timmerman Auditorium located in Hyland Hall on the UW-Whitewater campus.  The talk is open to the public.  The event will also be live streamed via webex.  Registration is necessary to recieve the webex link but walk-ins are welcome at the in-person event.     

Kao Kalia Yang is a Hmong American writer. Her first book, The Latehomecomer: a Hmong Family Memoir, was a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read title. Her second memoir, The Song Poet: a Memoir of my Father, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Chautauqua Prize, the PEN USA literary awards, and the Dayton’s Literary Peace Prize. It was listed as number 16 in Esquire Magazine’s “50 Best Biographies of All Time”.  Her collective refugee memoir, Somewhere in the Unknown World, was one of Kirkus Best Books of the Year.

Yang is a recipient of the Sally Award for Social Impact from the Ordway Center for Performing Arts and the A.P. Anderson Award for her significant contributions to the cultural and artistic life of Minnesota. She is a Soros, McKnight, and Guggenheim fellow.

This author visit is sponsored by a Tommy Thompson Center Speaker Grant awarded to Dr. Juk Bhattacharyya, Professor of Geology at UW-Whitewater and is offered in conjunction with a six-week book club focused on the memoir, Somewhere in the Unknown World.  The book club is open to the public and will take place in person and online every Wed from 12-1pm starting Oct 4th to Nov 8th.  To find out more about the book club opportunity follow the links below:
